„C’mon c’mon” is the latest movie of Mike Mills. It is a black-and-white drama about a radio journalist Johnny and his 9 years old nephew Jesse. Jesse grows up in a family struggling with his father's mental illness. When his mother tries to help her husband, Jesse is placed in the care of his uncle, Johnny. Together they go on Johnny’s business trip. They have to listen to each other so they can understand each other. At first, I wasn’t sure if is a good film about a relationship between a child and an adult; but as I watch I became hooked and changed my mind.
The director and actors did a genuinely great job and Joaquin Phoenix (Johnny) and Woody Norman (Jesse) were fantastic. They created an absolutely stunning world which is part of every viewer’s world. Why? Because everyone can recognize himself in the characters. In this movie an adults complicated world collides with a child’s simple world. Easy questions meet uneasy answers. It is a truly informative world. Who amongst us doesn’t ask questions and doesn’t search for answers?
This movie is set in the world of contemporary American cities filled with ordinary young peoples. We meet them during Johnny’s work day. As a journalist he collects young’s people thoughts about their lives, fears and plans for the future. For me perspective there are great supporting role. We don’t often hear about the problems of youth. In this movie they take the floor. We hear stories of fun, surprise and full of hope. We also hear stories that are sad and filled with doubt. Thanks to these stories Jesse has the courage to open himself up and honesty share his own story of deep feelings. The lesson: we all need to give voices to our feelings.
Wendy Ide from the Observer wrote: “This is a movie about listening - really listening - to what other people have to say.” I agree with her opinion. The gripping plots makes a space for conversation and listening. Although it is the world where God seems to be pushed to the margin. This is the world of many modern children. I’m sure, if Jessy’s family met God, a lot of their questions wouldn’t be without answers. In conclusion, this movie is a “must-watch” for everyone who isn’t afraid of listen to others, to ask questions and willing to face the answers.
